The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) developed the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence (R.A.C.E.) to support the performance, training, and development of its student-athletes. This state-of-the-art facility includes a football practice complex, team meeting spaces, classrooms, weight training areas, and sports medicine environments. These areas are designed to enhance both athletic performance and academic success.
Ford AV designed, engineered, and integrated audiovisual systems throughout the athletics facility, delivering a comprehensive AV solution that included system design, installation, commissioning, and end-user training to support coaching, training, and team collaboration across multiple environments. The project was supported by Ford AV’s engineering team, ensuring system performance and design alignment across the facility’s AV environments.
AV Systems for Athletic Training & Team Collaboration
Ford AV deployed athletics facility AV systems across a wide range of spaces, including coaches’ offices, team auditoriums, position group classrooms, weight rooms, and sports medicine areas. The classrooms were designed to support film study and team instruction, incorporating projection systems, audio systems, microphones, and displays. Larger team spaces, including the auditorium, were equipped with high-performance projection and sound systems to support full-team meetings and presentations.
The deployment included classroom presentation technology, distributed audio systems, large-format video displays, and specialized systems to support live athletic environments. This multi-system integration ensures consistent performance across both instructional and operational spaces.
Innovative Projection & Instructional Technology
The projection systems doubled as interactive teaching surfaces within position group classrooms. Short-throw projection systems with 90-degree lenses were installed directly above whiteboard surfaces, allowing coaches to display content while maintaining the ability to write and diagram plays in real time.
This created a flexible instructional environment in which digital video analysis and traditional coaching methods could be used simultaneously. Integration of projection technology and writable surfaces enhanced film study sessions for quarterbacks, running backs, and offensive and defensive units.
Athletics Facility AV Infrastructure & System Deployment
Ford AV delivered robust AV infrastructure across both indoor and outdoor environments, coordinating closely with construction and electrical teams to ensure integration into the broader facility infrastructure. This infrastructure included installing fiber connectivity to the football practice field scoreboard. The deployment included over 400 feet of fiber cabling to an exterior rack location, supporting reliable communication between systems and extending AV capabilities beyond the main facility.
Within the weight room, Ford AV installed a large-format video wall as the space’s visual centerpiece. The system was securely mounted on a cinderblock structure using specialized mounting techniques and precision installation methods. Once commissioned, the video wall provided dynamic content display and reinforced team branding, enhancing the overall training environment. All systems were fully tested and commissioned to ensure reliable performance across the facility, with on-site training provided to enable staff to effectively operate and manage the AV technology.
